“Wood furniture and wood flooring in particular often comes up as a consideration during interior design planning. The ability of wood to create instant warmth, to make any space inviting and to suit many styles is truly hard to match. Wood flooring technology is moving forward quickly and if you are not in the trade, you might find the various flooring options somewhat overwhelming.
creamylife has teamed up with London based
Wood and Beyond to bring you the hottest trends in wood flooring for interior designers. The three most important parts of wood flooring are their types, wood species and coatings, here is more…
Wood Types Explained:
Technology for wood flooring is moving quickly and next to the traditional solid wood flooring a new alternative has emerged called engineered wood flooring. Solid flooring has been around it seem forever and is constructed from one piece of timber. This created a problem under some circumstances because the natural properties of wood is to shrink and expand due to temperature changes. So the answer was to create a new type of wooden floor which can handle temperature fluctuations called engineered floor which is made from plywood, hardwood veneer and wood. Confusing? It is really simple in reality. Both floors look the same and the only major difference is the ability of engineered wood to cope better with temperature changes.
Solid wood flooring – made from 100% and still very popular:
Engineered wood floors – made from wood, plywood and hardwood veneer, a combination which allows the floor to cope with temperature changes:
Wood Species Explained:
There might be a few types of wood species which you are likely to come across, though the most popular and widely available are Oak and Walnut. For wood to become suitable for flooring, it has to offer such properties as durability, strength and affordability. In terms of design, the wood species needs to have attractive grain markings which is the natural circular patterns on the wood’s surface.

Wood Coatings Explained:
Flooring is normally covered in a top layer called, coatings. It does not matter if you bought solid, engineered, oak or walnut floors, they all require a top layer to protect the floor from minor damage and to give it that unique look. There are two types of coating, those which are designed to prolong the lifespan of the floor, such as UV coatings which is recommended if the floor is exposed to direct sunlight and those which are designed to colour match the floor to your interior design style as you can see below.

Are There Any Other Consideration?
Unfortunately some types of wood species are endangered and are on the verge of extinction. When you buy wood flooring, try and find suppliers who source their woods from sustainable forests. These are managed forests where trees are always replaced and sourced ethically.
Enjoy your new floor.
